A Maker’s Journey: How This All Started

starting an etsy shop as a couple

Before I start my story, if you’re looking to get started on Etsy, use this link to get your first 40 listings FREE (Click Here). I get 40 listings, too – WIN, WIN! Now… Why you’re really here…

One year ago, if you were to tell me I would have a successful Etsy shop that I enjoyed managing, I would have looked at you like you were crazy. I would have said, “I’m not creative, I don’t know the first thing about Etsy, and I have no idea what I would even sell”. Fast forward one year and here I am – creating items in my spare time, researching SEO like a mad-woman, and constantly checking my stats to see if people are viewing my page. So why did this happen? And why do I think you should jump on the bandwagon, too? Let me start from the beginning…

How It All Started

My husband and I were walking around a home decor store, astonished at the prices we were seeing. We kept saying to each other, “we could make that… we could totally do that… that probably only cost them 2 bucks to make”. We saw a hymn with a cow painting on it and that’s the inspiration that started it all. We looked at each other, brainstormed ideas in the car, and never looked back. The following weekend was one I will never forget. We started making EVERYTHING. We painted our own mason jars for our wedding, so we knew that was something we could do for people. We had hymns baking in the oven and running through our printer. We had pinecones on the table, tarps across the kitchen floor, spray paint throughout the house, and chaos around every corner. Do you think we did any research beforehand? No. Did that set us back a bit? For sure. Do I regret it? Not a chance. If we hadn’t just gone for it, I probably would have been scared away by the immense amount of creators, competition, and work ahead of us. We jumped straight in. We definitely had a lot of trials along the way, major disagreements, and restless nights. However, we learned that this little hobby of ours was FUN. Even if the sales didn’t come rolling in, sharing this creativity and time together was worth it. If you want an outlet that allows you to be your own boss, focus your energy on something that may make you money, and grow in your knowledge of small businesses – maybe this Etsy thing is for you. If not, that’s fine, too. You’ll never know if you don’t jump in.

Three Reasons Why You Should Start an Etsy Shop

Reason Number 1

You don’t have to be a creative wizard. I repeat – YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A CREATIVE WIZARD. There are a ton of easy crafts, stationary designs, and services that people are shopping for. That’s right – people are out looking for these little things that you could be profiting from and you’re currently not doing anything about it! Can’t paint? Who cares! Neither can I (my husband can, but that’s a different story). You don’t need to be an artist to be creative. You only need some great ideas and YouTube. Seriously, YouTube can help teach you how to do anything.

Reason Number 2

Etsy makes it easy. Don’t get me wrong, it takes time and effort. However, you don’t have to be a web designer, shipping expert, or creative genius to open a shop on Etsy. Go to etsy.com, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click sell on etsy. BOOM – you just took the first step to opening your shop. Don’t know what to do next? Remember, YouTube has you covered. (We do, too, so don’t hesitate to ask us questions)

Reason Number 3

It’s fun! Creating items, designing, making cute social media stories, and selling to customers is actually a blast. I know, I know. You don’t believe me. In fact, a year ago I don’t think I would have believed those words, either. But it’s true. Once you start the Etsy journey, you become a part of a community filled with eager, ambitious people with one common goal – to hear that cha-ching! Now is the time. Make the jump. It’s THAT easy.
