First things first…
What exactly is Etsy?
Etsy is an e-commerce website where you can sell and buy handmade goods, vintage items, and craft supplies. There’s no other place where you can find such an immense supply of unique, personalized items!
By shopping on Etsy, you’re supporting small businesses around the world. There is a person on the other side of your purchase smiling with pride because you’ve invested in their passion.
Etsy is a home for creativity, community, and joy. If this excites you, then keep reading. I’m about to share how you can get started on Etsy and make money fast.
Step 1 for Getting Started on Etsy
The first step you should take is finding your niche and deciding what items you can sell.
You want your shop to have a good foundation. However, don’t let this keep you from taking the plunge and putting yourself out there. You can ALWAYS change things as time goes on.
Finding the right items can take trial and error. Unfortunately, I often find this is what keeps people from getting started. Do you want to sell home decor, jewelry, vinyl items, or digital designs? Do you want to sell a mixture?
You also want to keep shipping in mind. We made the mistake of listing large framed photo displays without figuring out how we were going to ship them. Needless to say, shipping was underestimated and we ended up losing money from an order. Learn from our mistakes and make items that you can ship in normal sized boxes or envelopes!
A lot of shops will tell you to stick with one type of craft; however, I’m here to tell you that’s not always the case. Make sure your brand is cohesive, but you can sell many different items in your shop. Many people have found success in selling a variety of items. If you build your brand and drive traffic from social media, you can find success! There are tons of avenues you can take! This is a great resource I have found to get you brainstorming ideas: 9 Things to Sell on Etsy
Step 2 for Getting Started on Etsy
Create your product!
This is the fun part. Plan on creating at least 10 listings (a listing is an item for sale).
When making your items, it’s important to keep in mind cost and time efficiency. Is this something you can make for a low cost, so you can sell it for a profit? Also, is it something you can crank out easily if orders pile up? These are important things to remember, so you’re not panicked and frustrated down the line. Research Etsy fees and production cost before you list your items.
Step 3 for Getting Started on Etsy
Create your shop on Etsy.
You may want to start step 3 on a new day, so you’re not completely overwhelmed with creating and setting up a website. Go to Etsy’s homepage, scroll to the bottom, and click “Sell on Etsy”.
Now, you’ll go through these steps to successfully start the journey (and might I add – it IS a journey) to selling on Etsy.
Step 4 for Getting Started on Etsy
Choose a name for your shop.
Be careful when completing this step. You will be stuck with this name for a long time. It will become a part of your everyday vocabulary, which has the potential to leave you cringing or pridefully telling everyone you know. You want your shop name to be something that you can build a strong brand around. Also, it should be memorable, simple, and something you’re proud of.
But don’t overthink it. Please, please, please don’t let THIS be the step that holds you back.
Step 5 for Getting Started on Etsy
Take photos of your product.
This is probably the most important part of selling your items. I strongly suggest you invest in or borrow a high quality camera. However, if that’s not possible, then take amazing photos with your phone. Your photos should be horizontal, not profile. I will write a blog post soon about how to take amazing, jaw-dropping photos of your items. You don’t have to feel helpless! There are plenty of tips out there to getting photos that draw in customers and avoid getting lost in a sea of competition.
Each listing should have 10 photos. You should fill all 10 spots!
Step 6 for Getting Started on Etsy
Stock your shop.
List your items and write captivating descriptions! Make sure you’re as detailed as possible when filling out the information for your item.
You’ll also list the price and quantity available at this point. Don’t sell yourself short by constantly attempting to undercut the competition. All that does is tell other people you don’t think you’re worth the money. You want to be competitive, but still make a profit. After all, this is hard work!
Step 7 for Getting Started on Etsy
Complete your shop profile.
Set up your account information. Then, edit your shop by making a banner and profile picture. Your profile picture should be your logo! If you don’t have a logo yet, don’t panic. You can easily create a logo and banner using Cava.com.
Fill out your about section completely. People want to know who they’re buying from and if you’re reliable. Post pictures, list credentials, and tell your story. Everyone loves a good story!
Set up your shop policies. Etsy does most of this for you, but you may want to change the processing time and return policy.
Step 8 for Getting Started on Etsy
You’re going to look a little like this…
Sell to people you know, then strangers will come rolling in. Once people you know start buying from you, make sure they leave a good review. This way, you’ll gain credibility with Etsy and they will want to promote your shop. It’s not easy making your first few sales. However, once you get your first sale from out of state, your confidence will be over the moon.
We’ve now sold to over 30 different states and 2 different countries.
Trust me, the day will come when you look at a map of where your sales come from and you will be astonished! It just takes hard work and a bit of marketing to get there.
Make sure to answer conversations from people quickly and market yourself across all platforms. I believe in you! You got this. Make the jump!
